Relation between Usability & Accessibility

Accessibility - is designing/creating websites so contents can be viewed and understood by all users on all technology platforms using any interface (GUI browser and/or text-based reader).
Usability - is designing/creating websites that are intuitive to navigate, consistent in appearance and deliver relevant information.

What’s the relation between Usability & Accessibility?

  Usability and Accessibility are compatible.
Usability and accessibility are compatible design approaches. It share a concern for universal design as a foundation for good design. It also share some design methods and techniques, but can be and should be shared more.
Accessibility can be approached as a subset of usability.
We have become accustomed to thinking of accessibility as an isolated issue, when of course it is simply a prerequisite to usability.
Accessibility improve usability for other users; usability improve accessibility and both are essential for "Universal Design".
Some believe that there are times when usability and accessibility requirements conflict and that accessibility requirement restrict design techniques that would improve usability. It is true that design guidelines may sometimes suggest conflicting design solutions, but this is equally true of different sets of usability guidelines as it is of accessibility and usability guidelines.
Usability & Accessibility - Key Components in Website Design.
Usability and accessibility are two of the most important components in successful website design and yet seem to be two of the most neglected.

Usability and Accessibility Myths

Myths: Creating a text-only equivalent is sufficient for Web Accessibility.
Two versions of the same website represents a huge commitment of time and money for you. Your primary site may not be accessible to many users. ‘Separate’ accessible website for disabled users can be one more way to make them feel marginalized from mainstream society.
Myths: Accessible websites are not attractive and user friendly.
A well planned Accessible website need not affect the design of the website in any way whatsoever.
Myths: Disabled people are not my target audience.
Making a websites or applications accessible does not only fulfill the need of targeting disabled users. It greatly enhances the usability and provides an excellent user experience for your target users.
Making an Accessible and Usable website takes planning, mindset and commitment….
The greater cost is in not being “Usable & accessible”
